2021 Freehold Tax Cancelled, Boaters Refunded DAFN Amount

An exemption? April fools!

April Fool's Day - The state is going to help boaters for this year. The Annual Fee for Francisation and Navigation (DAFN) is cancelled for 2021! For boat owners, the tax will therefore be purely and simply refunded

Due to the COVID19 and the various bans due to the health crisis (containment, curfew...), boaters could not fully enjoy their boats in 2020. In the continuity of the "Whatever it takes", the State has therefore decided to make a gesture towards boaters by purely and simply abolishing the francisation tax for the year 2021. The decree of application should be published in the next few days with the details of this exemption.

This tax, known as the "Droit Annuel de Francisation et de Navigation" (DAFN), is due to customs by owners of pleasure or sports vessels under the French flag, for use in maritime waters. The tax was extended in 2013 to personal watercraft (PWC), for which the francisation (act conferring on the vessel the right to fly the flag of the French Republic) is now mandatory above a certain power. The tax base is based on the length of the hull and the administrative power of the engine.

For boaters who have already paid it, they will be reimbursed as soon as the decree is published in the official journal. The refund will be calculated as follows:

  • from to 5 HP included : exemption (non taxable motorization)
  • from 6 to 8 HP : 14 euros per HP above the fifth tax horse
  • from 9 to 10 HP : 16 euros per HP above the fifth
  • from 11 to 20 HP : 35 euros per HP above the fifth
  • from 21 to 25 HP : 40 euros per HP above the fifth
  • from 26 to 50 HP : 44 euros per HP above the fifth
  • from 51 to 99 HP: 50 euros per HP above the fifth
  • from 100 CV : 64 euros per CV without exemption

This sum can quickly become important: 1232 euros for a twin-engine inboard of 14 HP of 10 m and up to 200 000euros for a yacht of 70 meters...

All boaters concerned

It is obvious that some voices will be raised, once again, in front of the announcement of this exemption, the owners of the biggest yachts will be favored while the "small" yachtsman with his Leader 545 will not be much advantaged. But this measure has the advantage of addressing everyone and not forgetting anyone on the shore.

Marinas in the loop

In line with this exemption, Bateaux.com has obtained some indiscretions from marinas. It is whispered that due to the lack of port traffic during the season, they would also be inclined to offer a discount to those who could not approach their boat during this troubled period. A story to follow that could help us and that would put a smile on our faces. So follow with attention the news coming from your port...
