With more and more members, the IMOCA class is one of the most dynamic classes in ocean racing. And its sailors will soon be in the spotlight, as the next Vendée Globe will take place on 8th November 2020. Registration is now closed and it is time to take stock of the entries.

This 2020 edition of the Vendée Globe has set a record number of entries, as there will be 33 sailors lining up at the start of the single-handed round the world race, without stopovers and without assistance. The contenders at the start had to validate their entry in the 1 er september and we therefore know the men and women who are ready to sail around the planet. And precisely, in the batch, there are six female sailors, proof of the class' mixed nature.

While some were able to confirm their participation in the Vendée - Arctic - Les Sables-d'Olonne, raced in July - Isabelle Joschke (MACSF), Kojiro Shiraishi (DMG Mori), Clément Giraud or Erik Nigon - others have opted out of the race, preferring to reserve themselves for a single-handed course of 2?000 miles. In particular the skippers who had technical problems during the qualifying race, such as Sébastien Simon (Arkéa Paprec) who suffered damage to his foils or Armel Tripon (L'Occitane en Provence) were able to validate their entry.

On this substitute course, we also found skippers who already had a qualifying race under their belt - the Transat Jacques Vabre. So Nicolas Troussel (Corum l'Epargne) and Louis Burton (Bureau Vallée 2) just had to complete this navigation to qualify.

The Destremeau case remained. The last skipper of the 2016 Vendée Globe was nevertheless due to complete the 2?000 qualifying miles. Victim of a broken spreader base and forced to retire, he was able to count on a dispensation from the race directors to complete his course.

He had until September 15 to complete an additional 1?000 miles, which he honoured last week. That makes it the 33rd e entered in this 2020 Vendée Globe.
