Discovery / Ster Wen, at Belle-Île-en-Mer, a wild anchorage hidden in a rocky setting

At Belle-Île-en-Mer, nestled in a fault between two black shale cliffs carved by the wind and the sea, lies the wild anchorage of Ster Wen. This cove located 4 miles from Sauzon is a true haven of peace but beware, anchoring in this small inlet is not within everyone's reach.

Tie up to the rocks

Indeed, Ster Wen deserves itself and beware of anyone who tries to stop there without following the procedure. Here, we don't get wet like we should semble?! You have to anchor as close as possible to the rock face in front of you and then back up to the rocks and moor your boat's bottom against the rocks. Allow at least 30 m of hawsers that you will come to hit on the available hooks or directly on the rock, in the tender or directly by swimming. This will make it easier to climb the rock.

Make sure you check your installation before leaving the boat, as many have seen their anchor slip and put an end to the peace and quiet of other boaters. Because the risk is that the anchors will get tangled and that some will chase each other away..

Well protected in calm weather (east to north-east) - the sea is oily - one must be wary of the rapidly forming north-westerly swell which makes it difficult to exit the cove. Moreover do not hope to shelter in Ster Wen in bad weather, the bay will be difficult to access.

How can I find accéder??

From the northeast, after the Pointe des Poulains, go past the eastern cardinal, which is called Basse Occidentale des Poulains, to reach Belle-Île. You will then come across a north-south oriented arm of the sea overlooking the cove of Ster-Vraz - the main cove. On entering it, you will discover, to the south, a second Ster Wen "canal", at the bottom of which are anchored small boats, moored via ropes on a pulley crossing the fault from one side to the other. Watch out for the rock at the entrance.

Calm and voluptuous, but convivialité?!

At Ster Wen, take time to rest and enjoy the nature that surrounds you. The bay, very sheltered by the cliffs, doesn't let any network téléphonique? pass by! So, take advantage of it for décrocher?! A little tip: you might be able to catch a bit of 4G by hoisting your phone up the mast (in a backpack for example), taking advantage of the tilt of marée?!

To take advantage of a break from time, avoid the tourist season and prefer the months of April or October. Although during our stay in August, few sailboats had tried the experience.

If the anchorage is quiet, it is also convivial?! We'll always have a little word for our neighbours and everyone will have their own comment during departures and arrivals which are always a real spectacle?!

The happiness of the youngest

In the well-protected bay, children can safely enjoy diving from the boat deck, paddle rides or Optimist rides to develop their sense of wind.

Ways to disembark obligatoires?!

There are no pontoons here and to reach the mainland - or the rocks - you will have to have something to disembark on board: dinghy, paddle, kayak etc. You can also swim to the beach, but it will be less easy to carry a backpack..

Refreshments at 2 km

Apart from the spiders that you can find lurking in the rocky bottom, you'll have to do some walking to find enough supplies. The nearest village is Sauzon - 2 km away - with its port and shops, as well as its harbour master's office where you can take a shower.

Beware of the road - which you will have to take before you get to more protected roads through forests and fields - motorists tend to press accélérateur? for a reason!

To disembark, two solutions are available to you. You can either go to the beach at the bottom of the cove or climb the rock face, a solution that will delight the most adventurous and that allows you to arrive directly to the asses of bateaux?!
