Closing of the 2019 European Optimist Championships

The European Optimist Championships have just closed in Crozon-Morgat. The competition, which took place from 24 to 28 June 2019, brought together 293 boats from 50 nations.

In Optimist, the 7 best sailors of the 50 nations had their place on the starting line. 176 boys and 117 girls competed in the bay opposite Douarnenez. The boats were divided into 5 fleets (3 boys and 2 girls).

The weather conditions were perfect as the solo sailors were able to encounter all conditions: established NE winds of 15 to 20 knots, thermals of 12 to 15 knots or even calm conditions between 6 and 8 knots. Difficult conditions, sometimes changing, which made Olivier Latin, the Sports Director of the Crozon Nautical Center, say " The boy and girl who are European champions are really good in all conditions! ".

The organization of this international event was perfect. The ecological dimension of the site was also highlighted. With the proximity of all the activities that allowed everyone to walk, or even the tree planted for each child participating with the association Ecotree.

For more than 30 years, France had not organized this event. The return to the Breton coast, which took place in perfect conditions, gives ideas for other organizations.
