Studio Endémique launches sailboats combining new materials and reuse

The Endemic Studio presents a range of small sailboats that rely on the reuse of rigging and the use of green materials, such as linen and plywood.

A friendly project turned professional

Created at the end of 2022, the firm Studio Endémique is the result of the meeting of two friends: Maxime Kosnansky and Johnathan Dray. The first is an industrial designer, who has been sailing for years, while the second, a regatta competitor familiar with high-level circuits, has also worked as a prototypist and an expert in composites for ocean racing. Maxime Kosnansky explains: "We always had in mind to make a small sailboat together, then little by little, it became more professional. We presented the project at an innovation competition at the Grand Pavois in 2022, with great success and the encouragement of Arnaud Boissières. So we finally set up our company."

Transportable and simple sailboats

The two partners have thus worked on two models of transportable sailboats, the Scowpti 7 and EDM Scow 17. These two boats have plywood hulls, with an exterior linen fiber fabric. Studio Endémique's objective is to work as much as possible with local and natural materials. It also relies on the reuse of equipment from existing boats, says the designer: "We are on the principle of transproduction. The idea is to reuse existing rigs and make hulls to fit them. The Scowpti uses an Optimist rig and the Scow 17 uses a Hobie 16. This promotes the circular economy. Many schools and individuals have rigs that remain with hulls that are sometimes aging. We are proposing new platforms, working in particular on ergonomics, as with the Scowpti, which will be more comfortable to recall."

Decline the concept on larger sailboats

The first Scowpti should be presented at the Grand Pavois 2023, and the two partners are already working on the installation of foils. It will be offered in kit form for around 2,800 euros or 3,500 euros with the hull assembled.

For the 17 feet, the Endemic Studio wishes to propose to the customer to buy the hull naked or with the choice of a reconditioned second hand rig or a new rig. The budget is estimated between 25 000euros and 30 000euros depending on the options.

The two partners do not intend to stop there, as they explain: "We would like to apply the concept to larger sailboats, 30 to 35 feet, with Transquadra-type programs, with plywood and if possible transproduction."
