Stay on board! Don't lose the link with the boat! This is essential when you want to avoid losing a man overboard. The regulations take this into account since they require a harness on board as soon as you move more than 6 miles from a shelter (mid-shore category). You need one harness on a motor boat and one harness per crew member on a sailboat. Indeed, we consider that a sailboat requires more travel on deck than a motorboat.
Ideally the harness is integrated into the inflatable lifejacket. But it is also possible, for a much lower cost, to equip yourself with a simple harness (without a vest). In this case, it is a flat webbing lap strap held in place by 2 straps.
On the front of the harness there is a fixing point to fix the lanyard. This can be simple with a loop at one end and a carabiner at the other. But it can also be more complex, with an elastic band inside to reduce its size and avoid getting caught in it.
The carabiner must not be basic. It is preferable to choose a model with a safety device that will prevent it from opening unintentionally. To handle a safety carabiner, a double action is required. Fortunately, the design offices have designed safety carabiners that can be handled with one hand.
The catalogue Accastillage Diffusion includes Plastimo harnesses, which have the advantage of being equipped with a strap buckle to attach the lanyard. It replaces the stainless steel buckles we used to encounter before and had the disadvantage of hitting each other on the stomach.
On the long side, there are the standard lanyards with stainless steel snap hooks, but also the new Plastimo Race range which offers very light aluminium snap hooks. All these lanyards are equipped with a retro-reflective thread to help spot at night.
