On a boat, you have a battery park to power your onboard devices. The following will be connected to it: navigation equipment (plotter, autopilot, etc.), but also comfort equipment (lighting, fridge, etc.). This servitude battery park is to be distinguished from the starter battery to which only the starter is connected to drive the engine.
The technical characteristics of starter and service batteries are not the same. In the first case, the starter battery must deliver high power, but for a short time, while the service battery must deliver low current, but for a long time.
Lead batteries are the most common on our boats. This reliable and proven technology is also the cheapest. But these lead batteries have several defects, the main one being their capacity. A 100 Ah battery cannot be discharged to more than half its capacity. Failure to do so may result in permanent damage. Thus a 100 Ah battery really only provides 50 Ah. Then it must be recharged.
The advantages of lithium technology
With lithium technology, this is not a problem. Indeed, these batteries support a total discharge. A 100 Ah battery supplies all of its reserve with electricity without risk. This data must be taken into account when replacing its batteries.
Indeed, if we want to have 100 Ah, we will need a fleet of lead batteries twice this size. This induces more weight and more space to store the batteries. With a lithium battery park, you can see it differently: either you install a single 100 Ah battery (less weight, less space), or you decide to install two instead of lead batteries (twice the range).
Why doesn't everyone work with lithium?
Lithium technology is not yet widely available for cost reasons. A lithium battery is more expensive. But when you look at the benefits and lifespan, this price delta becomes less delirious.
In addition, Lithium batteries require a BMS (electronic box) to manage discharge and recharging. The development of these devices has given a bad image to this technology.
All integrated
Noovi offers lithium batteries that integrate their own BMS. These batteries are presented as lead batteries by taking the same size of case. Thus, with a Noovi battery, you exchange your classic lead battery for a lithium battery without changing anything else on board.
In addition, this battery connects to a mobile phone via Bluetooth. A free application allows you to visualize its power consumption and know the state of charge of the battery.
This battery is offered by the Accastillage Diffusion network at a price of 1759 euros for the 100 Ah model.
