Pen Duick 600, the mini cruiser designed by Eric Tabarly

How to choose your used sailboat? This week the Pen Duick 600, a small 6 m aluminium cruiser designed by Eric Tabarly to make sailing accessible to the greatest number. But despite its prestigious sponsor, this sailboat has never been a great commercial success.

  • Price from 2 500 euros
  • Produced from 1976 to 1979 in 350 copies

Why don't you buy yourself a Pen Duick? Not the first, nor the successful couriers of the great navigator Eric Tabarly, certainly... but rather the 600. It is a cruiser as original as it is iconoclastic - without being ridiculous, far from it, it is even rather clever..

Judge for yourself. Designed in 1976 by the famous skipper and his faithful acolyte Gérard Petitpas, this small keelboat meets a unique specification. The sailboat must be:

  • seaman
  • heavy-duty
  • accessible to the greatest number

A"mini Pen Duick for all", so to speak. To meet these specifications, the protagonists chose aluminium construction. Inside, there are four berths (the forward tip is a little narrow), a galley block that slides under the cockpit and a small table. The vaigrages? They are usually approximate... Renovation work often unavoidable!

But for less than 3,000 euros, buy yourself an indestructible mini cruiser!

The diagnosis of Bateaux.com

The aluminium construction is new. To simplify assembly, the boat consists of five sections. The front, as well as the stern, the deck and the transom are made from a simple developable sheet metal. Only the middle of the boat requires more complex boiler work. As a result, the 600 inherits a very pinched bow, a very round hull and a remote main beam. Characteristics that suit him well in light winds, close to the wind and in the chop. On the other hand, the boat is not very steep and is heeling from 15 knots of wind.
