Marine medical first aid kit for a boat

Legally, you need a first-aid kit on board a boat as soon as you sail 6 miles from a shelter. But what is this kit made of? And how can it be improved?

The department on which navigation at sea depends defines a"mandatory provision" for the first-aid kit. This basic medicine box is mandatory for boats sailing in mid-shore and offshore areas (more than 6 miles from a shelter).

It is composed of the following elements:

  • 1 pack of 5 sterile gauze pads, medium size
  • Chlorhexidine in single-dose aqueous solution 0,05 %
  • 1 haemostatic cushion
  • 1 roll of 4 m pancake strip (10 cm wide)
  • 1 roll of 4 m self-adhesive tape (10 cm wide)
  • 1 box of adhesive dressings in 3 sizes
  • 4 pairs of non-sterile examination gloves
  • 1 survival blanket

It's pretty"light" you have to admit. That is why the official text ends with this laconic sentence:"Any addition to the first aid kit is left to the initiative of the skipper".

It therefore makes sense to put together a kit in a pharmacy. The regulatory allocation is not enough. It will be completed according to the crew (children, specific care, allergies...), the climate, the sailing area (near or far from emergency services)..

Remember that, whatever your sailing area, you can consult the maritime medical consultation centre (CCMM based in Toulouse) free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By VHF (channel 16) or by telephone: +33(0)5.34.39.33.33
