The Neyk Submarine, a luxury submarine inspired by private jets..

Ocean Submarines is a specialist in the design and development of Dutch luxury submarines. Today, it presents its first luxury submarine, the Neyk Submarines, whose design is derived from the private jet industry. It is scheduled for completion in January 2018.

A high-end submarine

The construction of the first luxury submarine with an interior derived from the private jet industry is currently underway. This submarine with a total length of 19 m (63 feet) will have taken eight years of research and development at Ocean Submarines in the Netherlands. The submarine company has joined forces with leading global experts such as Rolls Royce, MTU and Bosch to create the Neyk Submarine.

With a reinforced steel modular construction and a NASA-optimized design, these submarines will offer a very high level of luxury and customization, as well as speeds of up to 15 knots and a capacity of 20 passengers. Its compact structure will allow it to be easily stored on a superyacht, but will also enable it to reach speeds three times higher than conventional submarines.

Three models are available with lengths of 20, 22 and 24 metres respectively, with tender versions of 6 and 9 metres.

A customizable layout from the airline industry

The Neyk Submarine has a fully pressurized hull and should be very maneuverable. The organization also indicates that the submarine will be equipped with high-end technology and components that have already been proven around the world. Customization options include a landing gear for the submarine to land on the beach, a hyperbaric chamber or a 270° underwater observation room in the nose of the submarine.

This first Neyk submarine will have an overall length of 19 m (63 feet), a maximum displacement of 100 tons and will be able to accommodate up to 12 passengers and descend to a depth of 150 m (500 feet). It will have large panoramic windows on top and three acrylic windows on each side. Inside, there will be comfortable armchairs, a bar, a library and a fully equipped kitchen.

This submarine benefits from the progress made in the construction of custom-built private jets in recent years. The diameter of the hull is exactly the same as private jets and the interior layout can be installed in a similar way, including systems such as air conditioning and all the facilities normally associated with private aircraft.

The spacious interior can be customised with furniture, ceiling panels and different types of paint that meet all fire regulations.

Thanks to its modular design, owners can choose the design that suits them, from classic to ultra-modern interior style. The Neyk Submarine can even opt for the same look as the motoryacht or associated tenders.

Tests to validate the concept

Over the past two years, the Neyk Submarine has undergone numerous tests, from PC simulations, to maneuvering simulators, to deep water tanks. Both the dynamic forces in motion (produced by the shape of the submarine's hull and the action of the rudders and fore and aft hydroplanes that control the submarine's position) and the static forces (weight and buoyancy) have been tested. Extensive tests were carried out on the main propulsion system to determine the optimal position of the engines outside the pressurized hull.

The electric motors were installed in pods on each side, specially designed to give the propellers up to five percent extra efficiency and provide additional cooling at low speeds. The revolutionary design also offers low drag and a very low underwater noise signature.

The submarine will be able to rotate on its axis in just a few seconds when the engines are running in opposite directions. Because they are positioned in front of the rudders, it can dive quickly, a more efficient configuration than the conventional cruciform design.
