Waterproof portable VHF, what maintenance?

Contrary to what people tend to believe, a waterproof portable VHF requires a little maintenance. The Icom technical department explained to us how to take care of their model so that it can continue to ensure our safety.

Often put to the test, sometimes mistreated, regularly forgotten, the portable VHF should not be left behind during the winter. Indeed, it is waterproof and will often be covered with seawater. And when you say seawater, you mean salt deposit.

We went to Icom France's after-sales service to learn a lesson on how to maintain a portable VHF. Olivier told us that these few minutes taken each year with his device would sometimes avoid going back to the workshop

The main part of the work will be to rinse the VHF to remove the salt. This will often be located under the volume knob and in the antenna thread. That is why we must start by tabling both of them. Then, by soaking the VHF in clear water, rub it with a toothbrush to remove all salt deposits.

Then with grease, we come to protect the metal parts. The grease will prevent corrosion from forming in these areas.

The maintenance of the portable VHF is really simple and takes only a few minutes. Do not hesitate to do so, as VHF is a safety equipment, it is important to take care of it.
