Thomas Coville crosses Ecuador 6 days ahead of the record!

Thomas Coville crossed the Equator, marking his entry into the northern hemisphere, on Sunday 18 December 2016 at 5:43 a.m. French time, 6 days 11 hours 23 minutes ahead of the record time. He now has 3,200 miles to go to complete his solo circumnavigation of the world.

Thomas Coville is now in the Northern Hemisphere with 3,200 miles to go to cross the finish line in Ushant. Setting out 41 days 14 hours 53 minutes ago, Thomas Coville crossed the Equator this Sunday 18th December 2016, at 05:43 French time, with a lead of 6 days 11 hours 23 minutes over the solo round the world sailing record that Francis Joyon has held since 20th January 2008. By way of comparison, Francis Joyon was only at the latitude of Buenos Aires (Argentina).

With an entry into the southern hemisphere on 12th November at 8 h 4 min 54 s will have taken just 35 days 21 h 38 min 6 s to sail round the world via the three capes of the round the world race: Good Hope, Leeuwin and Horn, in 5 days 11 hours 36 minutes less than Francis Joyon on Idec in 2008.

Here he has set a new solo record by establishing a new reference time between Ushant and the Equator in 41 days 14 hours 53 minutes 8 seconds, aboard his 31 m long and 21 m wide trimaran. He covered 23,583 miles (43,675 km) at an average speed of 23.61 knots.

He will now have to reach Ushant before 3 January 2017 at 4 h 22 min and 57 sec to beat the solo round-the-world record, held since 20 January 2008 by Francis Joyon on Idec Sport in 57 days 13 hours and 34 minutes. This will undoubtedly be a done deal, as the skipper of Sodebo Ultim' is expected between 26th and 28th December in Ushant, the start and finish line for round the world multihull races.

Since the start of his solo round the world voyage, the skipper of the trimaran Sodebo Ultim' has covered 23,583 miles (43,675 km) at an average speed of 23.61 knots. This morning, he is positioned 3200 miles (5926 km) from the finish.
