Aloes 18, a modern dinghy available in kit

The Aloes 18 is a small transportable dinghy with liquid ballast for family sailing. Available finished or in kit form, this modern sailboat has a lot to offer.

Designed and built by the young architect Antoine Mainfray, the Aloes 18 is a 5.50 m day boat made of epoxy plywood. The first model is under construction and will be presented at the Grand-Pavois de La Rochelle 2016.

It is a transportable day boat, designed for multipurpose use: sailing with the family, motoring to go fishing, for river navigation, or for more sporting use. It will also make a good support for learning the art of sculling.

Its large, self-draining cockpit is 3 m long and can accommodate 5 people in category D and 3 people in category C. The flush deck in front of the mast conceals a large locker for storing sails, personal belongings, picnic and safety equipment.

For raiding or coastal camping, a version with a small roof allowing 2 people to camp is available as an option.

The entire exterior space, even above deck, is enclosed by a bulwark. The transom closes off the cockpit, but does not impede access to the sea.

This dinghy uses a central ballast as main ballast. This offers both a high ballast ratio and a reduced weight for transport on a trailer (easier handling).

Its pivoting daggerboard (it is an integral dinghy) is weighted with 30kg of lead for safety. The 2 rudders on the transom can be raised in case of impact.

The standard rig is composed of a mast and an aluminum boom (AG+) with one stage of pushrods, shrouds and lower shrouds that do not require a backstay. Thus the mainsail is horned. The solent is mounted on snap shackles always in the spirit of simplicity. A 25m² spinnaker can be rigged on a carbon bowsprit (optional). For the sailors looking for performance, a kit of double trapezes allowing a more sportive navigation is also planned.

The Aloes 18 is positioned as less racing than the Seascape 18 or the Open 5.50 but less cushy than the Ikone. An in-between boat that can be bought finished or in kit form to assemble yourself.
