5 nautical questions to discover FX

How did you come to love the sea?

FX Ricardou: I've been sailing since I was a child. My dad had a 11 m steel sloop on which the engine (gasoline!) rarely started. Port maneuvers often ended under sail, or with a sculling. A good learning experience! Later, I even had the chance to take advantage of a sabbatical year to take a trip around the Atlantic. A year at sea on a First 35 for my greatest pleasure. I taste like the sea. I feel good there. But transmitting this passion has always been a driving force for me. After having taken many friends on board, nautical journalism naturally became the norm.

Do you prefer sailing or motoring?

My nautical education began with sailing. But my 5 years' experience in a motorboat review has allowed me to fully appreciate the pleasure of motorboating. Sailing and motor are two different worlds, but they are not mutually exclusive. For everyone, the ultimate goal is to have fun on the water.

What are your best memories of sailing a motorboat?

I remember sailing on the Gulf of Morbihan one morning in the middle of winter, so cold that we had to thaw the deck of the open hull to avoid slipping. A windless morning when sailing would have been of no interest. With our White Shark we travelled the Gulf on a sea of marble with the feeling of being alone in the world. Feelings inaccessible with a sailboat.

And under sail?

A cruise to Corsica in June will remain for me a magical moment. In those longest days, we enjoyed a wandering along the West Coast. On board a catamaran, we were able to anchor in beautiful and wild places without being bothered by the neighbours.
