Duracell project: Building a cosy saloon for living on board

To complement the doghouse space, Matt built a small saloon in front of the galley to provide a comfortable living area at anchor and underway.

Lightweight sandwich construction

As with the rest of Duracell's designs, Matt chose to build the square entirely from sandwich panels, which he vacuum-laminated before cutting. This solution keeps the weight down compared to a simpler plywood solution. Duracell was designed to be light in its racing program, and must remain so to perform well in its new cruising program.

A space that's quick to assemble

Matt gives himself a few days to assemble the new saloon. A half bulkhead is glued to the keel planking to separate it from the galley area, which will be built later at the foot of the companionway. Shelves are cut out to store equipment behind the benches. Then, finally, the bench panels are all put in place in time to test the space over a coffee before the video is published.

Which tabletop solution?

While the size is perfectly suited to a cozy space for living aboard as a couple with a future child, and a convivial place to enjoy breakfast or a game night, with the doghouse intended to be the main living space, the question of the table remains to be resolved. Matt and Joni want it to be removable. Two solutions are envisaged: a table that can be folded down onto the partition, or a folding coffee table that can be stored elsewhere if not needed. The couple gave themselves time to think.
