Duracell project: How much does it cost to renovate a 60-footer yourself?

On the occasion of his 100th episode, Matt takes stock of the project to refit his former 60-foot Vendée Globe yacht as a cruising boat, covering technical, financial and organizational aspects.

An update on the many projects already underway

Mat and Joni took over Duracell on June 16, 2021, to transform this yacht, which took part in the 1st Vendée Globe with American Mike Plant at the helm, into a comfortable boat for ocean cruising. Since then, a great deal of work has been carried out, discovered in previous episodes from deconstruction to the manufacture of a new coachroof, including transom lengthening, structural tank fabrication, cockpit or interior outfitting, and delphinière construction.

But there's still a lot of work to be done, and Matt lifts the veil. For example, the modification of the existing keel, the new rigging to be adapted to the boat with spreaders to be built, but also the numerous systems, the series hybrid electric motorization or the paintwork. Quite a change from fiberglass lamination!

Progress report

Replying to their Internet users, Matt and Joni also give a progress report. Aided by their YouTube channel and patrons, they have spent $57,000 over 2.5 years on the Duracell renovation, pointing out that the support of patrons has led them to carry out more upscale work, and that they would probably have used more salvage without it.

The schedule now takes them to the end of 2025, but they're looking to speed things up by employing someone part-time. Matt estimates his work on the project at 70 hours a week, while Joni spends 10 to 20 hours filming and editing the episodes.

As for what happens next, the navigation plans remain open...
