Navigation prohibited around 4 islets of the Lavezzi in Corsica

In red, areas closed to navigation

The Préfecture Maritime de Méditerranée has just issued an order banning sailing - and not just anchoring! - in 4 areas of the Lavezzi archipelago.

For 5 years, until the summer of 2028, it will no longer be possible to sail around certain islets that encircle the Lavezzi :

  • North of Lavezzi island
  • Ratino Island
  • Porraggia Island
  • Perduto Island

The ban was introduced to protect three endangered bird species:

  • the crested cormorant
  • audouin's gull
  • common tern

All three species are sensitive to human disturbance and are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The ban on shipping will provide them with areas of peace and quiet.

This drastic choice has been made in view of the increasing number of visitors to this navigation basin, especially during the summer months. For the next 5 years, these areas will be closed to navigation, anchoring and parking of registered vessels and craft (including personal watercraft and jet skis)

During this period, an ornithological assessment will be carried out to determine whether the regulations should be renewed or made permanent.
