Duracell project: Installation of drains and a tribute to Race to Alaska

Matt is making progress in finalizing Duracell's coils, and takes advantage of his video to take us to the start of Race to Alaska, which he has won in the past.

Drain the coaming

Having made provision for the installation of equipment under the cockpit coamings, Matt installs the drains before finally fitting the coamings. To do this, he starts by drilling holes with a hole saw, in 2 different diameters. The larger hole is not drilled all the way through. That way, when Matt inserts a portion of fiberglass tube for the drain, there's still room for the epoxy to bond around the tube. Hoses will be connected from below to discharge water into the cockpit later.

Gluing and securing the coamings

Matt then glues and laminates the coamings, built in previous episodes, to the deck. The numerous small elements mean that the fabrics and cutting times are multiplied. The silhouette of Duracell in its new configuration continues to unfold.

Race To Alaska

Matt leads his yard to Port Townsend, port of departure for the unusual Race To Alaska, reserved for boats without engines . He takes us down to the docks to meet the participants and watch the start in the early morning light of the Far North summer sun. Matt and his colleague A,l, with whom he won the race aboard a trimaran, talk about the difficulty of this event in waters where navigation can be tricky.
