Web series / Duracell Project: A new roof for the old racing yacht

Duracell's refit project continues and the former Vendée Globe yacht is changing its appearance. It's time to remove the old roof and make the template for the new cockpit that will comfortably accommodate the crew while cruising.

Remove roof and partitions

In today's 2 episodes, Matt radically changes the exterior of Duracell by tackling the work on the boat's new roof. In the first stage, it's time to carefully cut out the superstructure. The boat, reinforced by the new bulkhead made during the previous work, can now do without it. The old bulkhead is also removed, leaving a peripheral ring that keeps the hull extra stiff.

Make a scale model of the new roof

Before building the final roof, Matt made a 1:1 template on the boat. After installing three temporary couples, held together by sections of wood, he uses flexible battens to shape the sides of the roof. Assembled together, they can be used as a template on a thin wooden board. Cut according to the layout, then cut to visualize the future glazing, the boards are fixed on the couples on board.

Other boards are bent to make the top of the roof.

Matt and his partner can now visualize what the saloon of their future boat will be like. Bright, it will allow a 360° vision. The rear overhang of the roof will offer protection to the crew in the cockpit.

Duracell has begun its exterior muse and has a new silhouette!
