Shipyard visit / Euroship services, boats to live on built like for the pros

Solid boats to go far © O. Chauvin

It is in the Netherlands, the other country of sheet metal forming and naval boiler making, that the Euroship services shipyard builds modern units with a classic design. Strong boats, made of steel and designed to live on board and sail far away.

Kees Cornelissen built his first boat in 1976 in Heerewaarden on the banks of the river Meuse, in a charming village. Since then, nearly 180 boats have left the Euroship services workshop, most of them Luxemotors. Since 2015 Jim and Glenn, the 2 Cornelissen sons have joined their father and are pursuing the same goal: to make boats that are as solid as work units and as comfortable as land dwellings.

The luxury of efficiency

High and pinched bows, round butts, thin silhouettes... The lines of the Luxemotor are elegant. The name comes from the sailors who considered the first engines as a luxury. The thinness of the lines came to compensate for the lack of efficiency of the first Diesel engines which struggled to propel the heavy transport hulls. The shapes and dimensions have been raised to the Scheepvaartmuseum of Amsterdam. On this traditional base, the shipyard builds modern boats with a timeless silhouette.

Handcrafted tricks

Crackling of welding machines, shrill flights of grinders, sparks, pungent smell of molten steel, paint, plaster... several units are under construction, in different stages of finishing. Here a pile of numbered couples lies on the ground. There, the ironworkers assemble and bend the sheets while at the other end of the workshop, the carpenters adjust the wheelhouse of a beautiful 17-meter unit. The painter sands, smoothes and polishes these hulls. He applies the paint at night when the dust raised by his 20 colleagues settles a little.

State-of-the-art tools

The centerpiece of the workshop is a digitally controlled plasma cutting table that can accommodate sheets measuring 12 by 3 meters and cuts out all the elements of a boat in record time and with diabolical precision. The boats are born from there: a giant puzzle with numbered parts and welding marks. Sometimes these kits are sold as such, but in most cases they are assembled on site.

A traditional assembly

A single companion presents and points out the structural elements of a 15 meter boat. Winches, jacks and sledgehammers help him to form the suitable sheet metal with an illusion of ease. The boat takes shape and structure at a spectacular speed. In the narrow keel, another man wearing a leather suit lines up the kilometers of welding beads that will give cohesion and waterproofness to the whole.

At all stages

The shipyard produces fully finished and equipped boats, but its boiler making capabilities are far superior to those of other trades. A part of the production is therefore sold as bareboat to be fitted out. One of the keys to the success of Euroship Services is to be able to adapt to the demand and to be able to create and deliver a customized boat. From a few basic models, all variations are possible, in size, in equipment, in fittings; whether it is a question of "sheet metal" kits or units ready to sail.

A flawless finish

For this, a protective primer is first applied. Hull, deck and even the bottom of the trunks are coated. Each corner receives a joint-cut which improves the finish and will facilitate maintenance during the life of the boat. This is followed by several coats of glossy lacquer. The final result is stunning! The boat is insulated with rock wool, then receives its equipment and motorization, before the carpenters install floors and partitions.

Adapted to harsh climates!

The finishing touches are decided in agreement with the client, but we do not compromise on central heating, both floor and radiator. Euroship boats are designed to be lived in, to sail far away and in all climates. K. Cornelissen strongly refuses to see them as yachts or pleasure boats. They should sail as workboats and offer the same comfort as a land-based home!

Customized design

Euroship services builds passenger boats and some small units, but the Luxemotor is its real specialty. The basic model is 15 meters long, but anything is possible, including adding a few meters to create an artist's studio, a hold/garage for a small car, a motorcycle or any other fantasy. Most of the boats leave the yard equipped with anchor piles that slide into wells and allow safe and comfortable parking in calm, shallow waters. Classic boats, built to live in and to sail far!
