Web series / Duracell Project: How to make a wall template

To transform his Duracell racing boat into a comfortable cruiser, Matt needs to move a bulkhead. To do this, he gives us a step-by-step tutorial on how to survey the hull geometry and make the template for the future bulkhead. A fairly universal method.

Move the bulkhead to rearrange the boat

After completely removing the cockpit floor and engine hold from the Duracell Open 60, Matt can tackle the first step in the boat's refit. To do this, he plans to move a bulkhead back 40 centimeters. Although he has worked in shipyards, the young man does not consider himself a seasoned boat builder, although he shows us a nice sample of his experience with a nice plywood sport boat he built himself. So he humbly takes on this new task and gives us his method.

Detailed tutorial of the hull survey

To make the new bulkhead, further back, Matt has to start by making a template and to do that he has to know the geometry of the hull. In a bonus video (2nd video at the bottom of the article), he details the method.

The boat was first shimmed longitudinally and transversely. Then, the position of the new bulkhead was traced on the inside of the hull with tape.

Then comes the taking of dimensions. A board fixed on a vertical frame is positioned in the plane of the new partition. A small beam of square section, cut in point, is used as pin. It is positioned on each characteristic point. Then, a line is drawn on the board to define the angle of the survey and a line on the pigeon to define the distance of the point. Each mark is numbered with the reference of the given point.

Once all the characteristic points have been taken. All that remains is to transfer the elements onto a sheet of OSB, repositioning the pin identically. We obtain the points of passage for the layout of the wall. For the curves, we use a flexible lath to join them.

All that remains is to cut the OSB and test it in the boat to validate the template. If the bulkhead is slightly smaller in some places, the gluing will block the approximations.
