Web series / Duracell Project: Inventory and visit of the sailboat before transformation

Before starting the transformation of the former Duracell, Open 60 that participated in the 1st Vendée Globe, Matt showed us the boat as he had recovered it. An exciting base for an ambitious refit project.

A sailboat left on land for over 10 years

Duracell, the 1989 Vendée Globe Open 60, has been on land for many years. Matt's ambition is to transform it for his new project of cruising as a couple, after several years of experience with his partner on a 40-foot sailboat. The condition of the boat, without being catastrophic, will require extensive work.

Matt takes us on a guided tour of the boat, now parked behind his home. We discover a closed and deep cockpit, with imposing winches and complex suspended rudder systems. They will probably be simplified and the mainsheets revised to gain space. The foredeck, in the absence of the mast, seems gigantic.

An interior to be revised to transform the boat into a cruiser

Inside the doghouse, Matt shows us a vintage skai watch seat and a kitchen reduced to the simplest equipment. Below deck, the spaces separated by watertight partitions are dedicated to technical spaces only. Matt will keep an engine room but intends to take advantage of the volume to create a "cozy" interior, by making existing equipment and ballasts disappear.

As he summarizes, we'll start from a nice, healthy void with a bridge over it!
