What to do if ? DIY for the preparation of the Mini Transat of Hugo

What if my solar panels fail? What to do if my pilot stops? Here are 2 questions Hugo answers before taking the start of the Mini Transat 2021. An instructive DIY episode on the level of preparation of the navigator.

Redundancy. This is the basic principle on which the preparation of the Mini Transat 2021 is based for Hugo, The Sailing Frenchman. For each thing, he asks himself the question: "What if...". What if I lose my keel? What if I dismast? What if I break a rudder? What do I do if...?

Each time, with each question, Hugo looks for the answers and prepares his solutions. Today, he explains us what to do if his electrical system breaks down. For this, he has a portable solar panel, a 200 W model with 3 panels that he can store in his hold. If necessary, he can take it out and connect it to his network. He also has an additional regulator (a Victron MPPT model) that can even be used as a spare in case the first one breaks down.

Hugo also explains what to do if his pilot breaks down. In this case, he takes a spare pilot with him, which is much less efficient than the main model, since this new pilot (a Simrad TP33) is a removable tiller pilot. The installation consists in providing its attachment and connection to the tiller. For more security, it even tries to connect the emergency pilot directly at the output of the solar panel regulator. Undoubtedly not an assembly to be advised, but a solution which has the advantage of not passing by the park battery if this one had a problem too.
