The multihull, a real house on the water

The multihull market continues to grow, driven by units between 40 and 60 feet. These boats are getting bigger and bigger, offering more and more comfort on board. If sailing remains the majority, the motor is becoming more and more attractive. But why is multihull sailing so attractive? Because the multihull is a real floating house!

A huge living space

Outside as well as inside, the living spaces are numerous and above all very large. The forward cockpit or trampoline for relaxation, the aft cockpit for open-air meals, the vast nacelle with living room, kitchen and helm station for quiet moments and life on board... on board a catamaran, it's a bit like living in your own home, often on the same level, so you can move freely from the inside to the outside.

From the intimacy

Thanks to its two hulls, the catamaran offers the possibility to separate the sleeping areas. Each of them can be equipped with one or two cabins with their own bathroom. An ideal layout for families, where each one sees its intimacy preserved.

On the other hand, this separate sleeping area from the saloon also allows for quiet seclusion, while guests can continue to enjoy the living space.

Comfort on board

With a large living space, you can arrange your boat like a house and equip it with all the comfort you want: refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. Of course, these equipments are energy consuming and will require the installation of a generator. But it is generally this comfort on board that seduces boaters.

Comfort in navigation

Of course, the sensations of sailing a cruising catamaran are not the same as in a monohull. Lovers of speed and adrenaline, skip it! But after all, this is not the program we are looking for... Owners appreciate being able to sail "flat", since the boat does not heel and they are rather looking to enjoy a moment of relaxation. Finally, thanks to its shallow draft, the multihull allows to get closer to the anchorages.

However, be careful, the catamaran pitches a lot and is less resistant to bad weather.

Disadvantages to be taken into account

If the catamaran lends itself easily to life on the water, it nevertheless has certain disadvantages. Starting with the access to the berths. With a large mast, the majority of multihulls are moored on a mooring, either because the harbors are not equipped to receive them, or for budgetary reasons, as the harbor fees are calculated according to the size of the boat.

Finally, maintenance is also more expensive and the fuel budget is higher.
