Ecology takes a real place at Virtual Nautic

Throughout the virtual aisles of this edition of the Virtual Nautic open on March 12 and 13, 2021, we have selected four green initiatives that might interest you. Sailing shuttle for Belle-Île, recycling hazard lights, there is no lack of ideas!

The most organic

Did you know that a yachtsman discharges an average of 10 litres of black water per day? Aquatech Innovation has therefore looked into the quality of water in harbours, by proposing a wastewater treatment system on land and/or in the water. To do this, it has created a bioreactor using an innovative 100% biological process, which adapts to variations in the volume to be treated (weekdays or weekends, for example) and can be monitored remotely. The concept has already proved its worth in several Mediterranean ports, allowing the discharge of "Bathing Quality" certified water into the natural environment.

The windiest

Currently, the majority of sails are made from polyester, a polymer obtained by chemical synthesis from petroleum. Elvstrom Sails has therefore started designing sails made from recycled plastic bottles. These sails, under the name of Ekko sails, are also produced in a Danish factory powered by wind turbines and heated by a hot water plant using recycled wood chips. The Danish company is also involved in recycling by encouraging users to return their used sails to give them a second life.

The brightest

Several types of pyrotechnic equipment are compulsory on board when yachtsmen sail away from the coast: hand-held lights, smoke bombs or parachute rockets. However, the life span of these devices is limited and they represent a risk for humans and the environment if they are abandoned in nature or improperly disposed of. To avoid any problem, APER Pyro has set up a relatively simple collection system: when buying new distress flares in a store, you can bring back your old flares, which are then collected, taken care of and disposed of by approved professionals. The list of collection points, which is very extensive, is available on the APER Pyro website.

The most touristic

What could be better than reaching Belle-Île-en-Mer by sail? This is the project of the company Iliens, which is planning its first trips for the spring of 2021, aboard a 16 metre catamaran which can take on board around fifty passengers. A one and a half hour crossing is planned, with the help of an auxiliary engine if necessary, in order to meet the deadlines. The crew will also provide tourists with educational tools to help them get to know and understand the ecosystems encountered during the crossing. An opportunity to promote sustainable tourism during your holidays! Prices and schedules can be found on the company's website.
