Test / Amel 50 architecture and design, a sloop repositioning

The Amel shipyard has been producing the highest quality cruising yachts for over fifty years. The 50 returns to the sloop rigging while offering the automation that distinguished the previous models.

A unique concept

The 50 is the first part of the rejuvenation that the La Rochelle brand has undertaken since 2017. Whereas the previous models were ketch-rigged, for the main reason of the greater ease of manoeuvring with a divided sail area and better balance under sail with the mizzen mast, the evolution of the technique now makes it possible to offer a single mast and two rudders to achieve much greater efficiency. The 60 that appeared in 2019 with the same sail plan proves that the concept works well. This simplicity of use is at the heart of the yard's DNA and has been in the spirit of its founder Henri Amel since 1964. This pioneer of French yachting was convinced that a yacht should be effortless to handle.

Robust and reliable

The reputation of robustness and reliability is the other great characteristic that the famous models of the brand, "Maramu" or other "Meltem" have peddled on all the bodies of water of the world. The 50 intends to keep this particularity up to date. The glass/foam/resin sandwich construction uses the best materials and every detail of the sailor's daily life in all phases of manoeuvres or use is weighed and weighed to provide the most reliable and practical solution. Fuel leaks, internally designed electric furling mast, engine room containing the technical equipment, watertight doors, everything is designed to avoid breakdowns and galleys and to be able to intervene effectively to remain safe in the event of a sea fortune.

A resolutely modern look

This unstoppable focus on all details was, however, somewhat tarnished by a somewhat aging image. The shipyard called upon the firm Berret-Racoupeau for naval architecture and Isabelle Racoupeau for interior design. The general line of the 50 is modernised with a transom almost as wide as the main beam. The doghouse is more fluid and the whole is very elegant on the water.
