The Vendée Globe as seen by its race director, Jacques Caraës

The next edition of the Vendée Globe will set sail from Les Sables-d'Olonne on 8th November 2020. This round-the-world race reserved for IMOCA boats will test the men and women, who every four years sail the seas of the Globe. Jacques Caraës, Race Director deciphers this new edition on video.

"It's a crazy race, it takes a little bit of crazy to do this." It is with these words that Jacques Caraës introduced the Vendée Globe. This single-handed, unassisted round the world race around the three capes, which takes place every four years, puts the sailors taking part in it to the test. Also known as the Everest of the Seas, the Vendée Globe arouses the admiration of the general public for its sailors, who are getting ready to brave the oceans.

In 2020, two thirds of the fleet will be IMOCA hydrofoil boats, i.e. boats capable of flying and lining up at high speeds. In four years, the boats have gained between 4 and 5 knots... This edition should therefore be much faster, with a race time of around 70 days. As a reminder, the defending champion, Armel le Cléac'h completed his 2016 round the world race in 74 days 03 hours 35 min 46 s

While 15 boats have the potential to finish on the podium, some are also taking part to experience an incredible adventure. But in any case, everyone is preparing hard for this incredible event, which requires more and more investment.

And at the finish, those who were lucky enough to have completed this round-the-world tour will emerge changed forever.
