A symbolic animal
The dolphin has been idolized by humans since ancient times. It is also believed to have performed many feats, such as guiding lost ships or rescuing shipwrecked people. Symbol of the sea, he is the favourite animal of Poseidon (god of the sea) and the incarnation of the solar god Apollo.
Popularized by the American soap opera Freak the Dolphin in the late '60s, and then by the film The Big Blue in the late '80s, the dolphin is the friend every earthling dreams of having. Except perhaps fishermen, for whom he is his greatest rival. The apogee of the dolphinariums also contributes (unfortunately) to this fascination, the dolphin appearing as a jovial, playful and extremely intelligent animal, executing to perfection the orders of its keeper for the greatest pleasure of the public.
The most intelligent animal species after man
Yet the dolphin does not receive orders. And this is probably what fascinates sailors so much. What could be more rewarding and flattering than to see this divine and mysterious animal approaching our hulls, who comes to grant us the favour of his presence for a few moments.
Surfing at the bow to allow ourselves to move effortlessly, enlivening our ears with his gentle vocalization or jumping at our side to the delight of young and old alike, the show never ceases to fascinate us. So, during our sailings, we look out for the mischievous animal with a strong power of seduction that has forever entered the collective imagination.
A fin on the horizon, a stealthy movement on the surface of the calm water, dozens of fishing birds diving for their food... Vu?! We change course and bend through the lines to give these famous blows to the hull, which we hope will attract the cetacean.
Above all, we don't force him... And this is undoubtedly the magic and the wonder of his venue?! For once, it is the animal that will decide to come and amuse the human. And it is the latter who will try to hold his attention to enjoy this incredible show more and more.
Rules to be respected
But for this unfailing bond between sailors and dolphins to last, for the dolphin to remain man's friend, respect their intimacy. Don't chase them, don't surround them, if you are in a motorboat, pay attention to your propeller and the deafening noise that resounds underwater.
If diving with them is not prohibited, keep in mind that they are wild animals and their reactions are unpredictable. Observe them as you wish, but don't swim to them at all costs.
