How to choose, install and maintain your compass?

A magnetic compass is mandatory for all sailings beyond 2 miles from a shelter. Beyond the regulatory aspect, the choice of a compass adapted to your boat is very important. It is a safety element, essential to the helmsman or the pilot's operation.

A fixed compass for which type of boat?

There are different compass models, suitable for sailboats or motor boats. The main differences will be in the angle of heel or the ability of the compass to withstand shock and vibration. A removable compass will be more recommended on a light boat. For steel boats, a compass with compensation will be required.

What size compass should I use for my boat?

The diameter of the compass will be defined according to the size of the boat and the position of the helmsman:

  • Boat up to 6 m: diameter 55 mm
  • Boat between 6 and 9 m : diameter 75 mm
  • Boat between 9 and 10 m: diameter 100 mm
  • Over 10 m: diameter 135 mm

This information is given for information only and may vary depending on the model of the boat or the navigation program.

Which type of assembly to choose?

  • Can be installed vertically, horizontally or at an angle: generally installed on a wall or dashboard
  • On stirrup: the most common on motor boats, easy and quick installation.
  • On barrel: ideal for sailboats equipped with a wheel steering system.
  • On a support fixed to the mast: for sportsboats or small sailing boats

The assembly

It is imperative that the location provided for your compass is far enough away from disturbing elements: speakers, fire extinguisher, electronic displays...

It must also be ensured that the axis of the compass is strictly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the boat, with particular attention to compasses placed on inclined surfaces.

For the installation of a built-in compass, a drilling template is provided with your compass. Simply glue it on the chosen location, drill the fixing holes and the passage of the lighting power cables, then cut the central part with a hole saw.

Remember to use non-magnetic screws (not sticky with magnets) to attach your compass.

The lighting

The compasses with lighting are equipped with two wires voluntarily assembled in braid to avoid disturbing the magnetic field.

The interview

A compass is maintenance-free. Just cleaning up. Clean your compass with soapy water. It is preferable to avoid solvents such as methylene, acetone or white-spirit, which are effective in the short term, but will strongly degrade the surface of the dome. If the liquid in the dome decreases, some models are equipped with a cap to make a top-up

Finally, after each navigation, do not forget to protect your compass with its protective cover. This prevents premature ageing of the globe due to repeated exposure to UVs.
