Heading for Liberty, an amazing but true story of the sea and migrants

Take migrants who are trying to flee their country at the end of the Second World War. And pile them up at 16 on a sailboat barely 11 m long. These hopeful men will leave Sweden and head for America. A true story, a sea adventure and the highlighting of a little-known part of the history of Europe.

Aiming for freedom is both a historical account and a wonderful sea story. As the hot news unfortunately reminds us, persecuted men are capable of performing incredible feats to save their lives and those of their families.

With "Heading for Freedom", we are in the aftermath of the Second World War, in Sweden, where Estonians fled Nazi occupation. But Stalin's new dictatorship does not promise them happier days.

Cap sur la Liberté

Forced to flee again, we will follow a crew that will embark on the Erma, an 11.30 m sloop, barely suited for coastal navigation. On this curious sailboat, 16 people will attack the Atlantic with the aim of reaching the United States.

This incredible crossing will not go smoothly with storms, waterways, risk of being taken by Allied countries, minefields... This book takes you to your heart both by its maritime history and by the willingness of these migrants to save their lives. This thirst for freedom is so strong that they are ready to give their lives in this adventure. Everything but returning home.

Cap sur la Liberté

This book is a reissue of a book that was translated into French in 1952. Eric Vibart, journalist at Voiles et Voiliers and specialist in the historical question, has rewritten this book to bring it up to date by using real and good marine terms, but also by popularizing the writing to make this story accessible to all readers.

For if this crossing of the Atlantic on a sailboat just designed to sail on an inland lake is spectacular, it is the story of man and their fierce desire to touch the Americas that is most poignant.

Cap sur la Liberté

This edition is enhanced by photos collected by Eric Vibart from two survivors of this adventure that he managed to find and meet. We should also note the afterword by the President of the Republic of Estonia, who provides a historical perspective on this extraordinary adventure.

Cap sur la Liberté

A true story, "Cap sur la Liberté" reads like an adventure novel. We live with these men who improvise themselves sailors and we accompany them to the sandstone of their navigation and stopover, shaking for them at every misadventure. A historical book that has a foothold in our times.
