Katadyn manual watermaker, a safety equipment

A man cannot survive without drinking. To avoid this, the Survivor 35 Katadyn is a manual watermaker that works only with human energy. A product that is in the Accastillage Diffusion catalogue.

In case of survival, Katadyn has developed a portable, manual watermaker. This kind of large pump can produce up to 4.5 litres of water in one hour. This product is therefore a safety device. In fact, it was taken on board by the solo sailors during their atypical round-the-world tour of the Golden Globe Race.

The Survavor 35 comes as a big pump with a long handle. With its 3.2 kg, stored in a bag, it easily finds a place aboard our boats. One hose goes into the sea, another into the water tank, and then all that's left to do is pump it out.

The optimum pumping frequency is 1 stroke every 2 seconds (30 strokes/minute). At this rate, you get 4.5l/h without any other source of energy than your own power (no need for electricity for example). It can therefore be taken anywhere, even on a raft for example.

The water is obtained by reverse osmosis. Salt water is pressurised (approx. 55 bar) in a semi-permeable filter membrane. Part of the water passes through the membrane (approx. 10%). The tiny pore size of the membrane results in drinking water of high purity. The remaining 90% of the water glides over the membrane surface and rinses off at the same time (self-cleaning effect).

Katadyn is using energy recovery. The energy generated by the high pressure of the discharged water is transmitted to the rear of the pump, making the next pump stroke easier. This energy is therefore recycled, reducing the effort required to obtain fresh water.

This product was added to our catalog Accastillage Diffusion for the 2019 season. You can buy it in one of the shipchandlers of the brand or directly on its website.
