Anthony Marchand is one of the figures of the Figaro class and sails under the colours of Groupe Royer Secours Populaire. For the past 8 years, he has been competing in the Solitaire du Figaro, winning the first stage in August 2018. This is his sailor's portrait.

What is your first memory at mer??

It was a day cruise around the island of Bréhat, in the Côtes-d'Armor. I was quite young, we didn't sail very far from the coast. I had been quite impressed by the size of the waves and the small swell.

What triggered you to launch yourself into this carrière??

I was doing Optimist and I didn't know yet that I could do ocean racing. I didn't know what it was. I was thinking more like an Olympic career. I met Yann Eliès and visited his Figaro 1. That's how I discovered ocean racing. Then I followed the Vendée Globe and it started talking to me.

At 20 years old, I stopped the 470 and then joined the Brossard team with Yvan Bourgnon. I met Adrien Hardy, who was a Mini and I discovered this boat. It's got a lot more to me. So I started out, and followed the Figaro.

Have you had a mentor or another skipper who has marqué? for you?

When I was younger, I was a fan of Peter Blake because I thought he had multiple labels. He has done the Olympic Games, the America's Cup, the Whitbread ( Editor's note: current Volvo Ocean Race ).

I bought the same red lucky socks, to do like lui?! (Laughs).

Which boat left you the best souvenir??

Obviously the ORMA trimaran, whether Sodebo or Brossard. It was my first Atlantic crossing. They are daring and volatile boats, but so formidable.

What is your greatest success with marin??

The Volvo Ocean Race ( Anthony was a helmsman and trimmer aboard MAPFRE in 2015 ). It was a success, because it's not a very French environment. There are few of us who have the chance to participate.

On a daily basis, what is your practice of plaisance??

None unfortunately I don't have the time. I rarely go on cruises. Otherwise, I was more of a motorboat and fishing.

If you hadn't been a skipper, what would you have fait??

I think I will necessarily have been involved in the world of sailing, whether as a trainer or as part of a technical team. These are areas that I like in sailing. I like the technique. So I would have looked for a place to work as a technician, but staying in this sailing environment.
