Offshore racing will be an integral part of the 2024 Olympic Games! The decision was validated by the member countries of the World Sailing Federation (the International Sailing Federation) at the same time as the start of the 2018 Route du Rhum was given on Sunday 4 November. This event will be held in mixed doubles on a keelboat monohull. This decision had been in discussion for some time, but the British federation did not want to hear about it.
Despite everything, this project, led in particular by the French Sailing Federation, was convincing, first of all with the mix. Indeed, this mixed event makes it possible to reach parity and to enhance the place of the woman in sailing! A decision that also reinforces the recognition of women with the title of International sailors of the year won by Marie Riou and Caolijn Brouwer
Finally, this offshore race in a habitable boat is closer to the general public, more used to sailing on this support than in a dinghy. The show will also be more spectacular and will therefore take place in Marseille
Here is the first information given by the international sailing organisation on the support used for this event: "The boat used will be a non foiler monohull, designed for sailing with a reduced crew. Its hull length will be between 6 to 10 metres, capable of sailing between 4 and 40 knots (sloop rig, mainsail and spinnaker)."
According to initial rumours, it could be a First 24 or 27, since the purchase of the Slovenian shipyard Seascape by the French leader Bénéteau in the summer of 2018
