Two events in one for the SNSM Record

SNSM Record

The 13th edition of the SNSM Record will take place from 22nd to 25th June 2017 and will bring together two events in one as it will be part of the transatlantic race The Bridge (Ultimate race against the Queen Mary 2. For this special anniversary edition - the SNSM is celebrating its 50th anniversary - many events are also planned.

For its 13 e edition, the Record SNSM is an integral part of "The Bridge" event, the Ultimate Transatlantic Race against the Queen Mary. Organised from 22 to 25 June 2017, the Record - which began in 2005 - brings together professionals and amateurs on different categories of boats. For four days, a motley fleet will be assembled at the start in Saint-Nazaire to sail one of the three courses: 180, 230 and 360 miles to Sainte-Marine at the entrance to the Odet River.

This event to promote safety at sea and encourage support for the SNSM's volunteer lifeguards has over the years become a large popular gathering supported by great sailors. Starting with Michel Desjoyeaux, sponsor of the event, but also Loïck Peyron, Thomas Coville, Franck Cammas, Ellen Mac Arthur, Roland Jourdain and Bernard Stamm, who regularly take part.

A special year for the SNSM

In 2017, the SNSM Record will have a special flavour as the association of 8,000 volunteers celebrates its 50th anniversary. It has also just received the label of Great National Cause 2017 and the first National Sea Rescue Day will take place on June 29th. And to mark the occasion, the association is organising the 50th Anniversary Trophy, reserved for Multi50s, on 23 and 24 June next. The race will take place the day before the start of The Bridge 2017.

On 21st June - one day before the arrival in Saint-Nazaire of the four giant trimarans racing on The Bridge - the four Multi 50's will be moored along the Quai du Commerce, after passing through the south chamber in the afternoon.

On 23rd June, the Multi50 fleet will set off for the Trophée des Cinquantenaire at 17:00 with a minimum of four crew members on board over a course of several hundred miles, bounded in its northern part by "La Chaussée de Sein" (to the east of the Ile de Sein) and in its southern part by "la Bouée d'eau saine du Pertuis d'Antioche" (to the south of the Ile de Ré). About 24 hours of racing await them, before a return under escort of the Queen Mary 2.

A Record SNSM/The Bridge parade

The SNSM will pay tribute to the Queen Mary 2 on her return to Saint Nazaire. Fourteen SNSM boats will mobilize upon her arrival Saturday, June 24 at 5:30 p.m. to escort her to the Port of Saint Nazaire on either side of the ship. Shortly before she returns to the Joubert Form where she will remain until Sunday, the Queen Mary 2 will in turn pay tribute to the Rescuers by hoisting their flag and simultaneously sounding her foghorn, while they will then greet her by setting off hand lights.

The SNSM boats also surround the Queen Mary 2 as the Bridge race starts on Sunday, June 25.

Numerous animations

A new challenge

This year, a new feature will appear within Record SNSM, the "Row for Sea Rescuers Challenge" carried by the Diffuz collaborative platform. Launched via the new Diffuz social solidarity network, initiated by MACIF, this challenge will take place on Saturday 24th June between 11 am and 6 pm and will be launched by François Gabart, skipper of the MACIF trimaran, who has come to show his support for the Sauveteurs en Mer, just as his partner has been doing for 30 years.

The kick-off will be given by François Gabart on the SNSM stand at 11 am.

Five oarsmen will be available to the public wishing to row for the Lifeguards at Sea. A real time counter is connected to the rowers, and each nautical mile rowed will bring 10 euros to the SNSM. The donation collected at the end of the day will be donated by Diffuz, partner of the event, to the SNSM.

Animations on land on the ponds

The public will be able to discover the SNSM's launches, take part in demonstrations on semi-rigid boats, visit the SNSM's launches, in particular the latest generation All-Weather canoe from Les Sables-d'Olonne, experience a rescue in immersion thanks to a 360° video device or discover the navigation simulator at the national training centre. A beach first aid post has been recreated, where prevention workshops will be held.
