XO DFNDR, an open hull for scuba divers

XO DFNDR

XO Boat has just presented two new models with a different look, including the DFNDR, the first open hull from the Finnish shipyard. Beneath its adventurous looks is a very well thought-out boat, with many details to make your sea trip easier. Discovery in pictures.

"We wanted to build boats that were radically different from what other shipyards are doing. That's why we created these two new models, including the DFNDR." explains Ville Frost, from the XO Boatyard. The Finnish shipyard has pulled off its coup with the XO DFNDR, a 7.6 m open hull with a "racer" look, which contrasts with the rest of the range, mainly made up of day cruisers with wheelhouse.

This centre console model has a hard-top 4x4 design, with a roof rack where you can store your stuff. "The centre console is typical of the United States, but we wanted to develop one for the European market. The design is really radical, it's been given a Jeep look. To accentuate the 4x4 look, we added a Webasto heater vent and headlights." details Ville.

There are several interesting elements, such as a transparent plastic canopy that can be installed on the hard-top to create a kind of wheelhouse. The space is then completely enclosed and heated thanks to the webasto heater. A deep trunk installed between the steering console and the two hanging seats serves either as storage or as a steering aid. Once open, it allows you to drive upright and gain stability, especially in rough seas. A rear bench seat for two people (with fridge underneath) completes the seating arrangement.

Space on board is really important for a model of this size, with plenty of storage space. First, at the front, where the trunk can be covered with cushions to create a sunbathing area (optional). Or against the front of the console, thanks to a sort of grille (to store cans for example). The passage from front to rear is easy with good-sized side decks and handrails on the hard-top and gunwales.

The aft cockpit is quite spacious, again with plenty of storage space, such as racks at the rear of the console to store fenders or the rear trunk, for example. Note the absence of a bench seat in the cockpit as this boat is above all dedicated to intensive use, for rowing, water sports or diving.

The XO DFNDR is powered by one (200 or 300 HP) or two (2x100 - 2x200 HP) outboard motors for a maximum speed of more than 40 knots. Like the rest of the range, it has a deep V hull and an aluminium hull, for safe navigation even in rough seas.
