White sharks also engage in pirouettes

A young surfer and his friend were taking waves at Sunset Beach, California, when they spotted a young white shark jumping entirely out of the water, just 30 metres from them. Drew Palumbo who left his GoPro on was able to film the incredible scene!

Drew Palumbo and his friend were surfing in Sunset Beach, Huntington Beach, California when the young man involuntarily filmed an incredible scene. A young white shark less than 2 m tall, jumping out of the water only 30 m from them. While he was on his board, paddling towards a wave, ready to film himself, the shark jumped right in front of his eyes. He then hurried back to shore. "It was quite spectacular," he explained.

"Once we saw him horizontally and his whole body came out of the water, we looked at each other with my friend, before telling ourselves it wasn't a common situation!" adds the young surfer.

The beach rescuers had warned the swimmers of the presence of sharks spotted the weekend before.

Dr Chris Lowe, Professor and Director of the CSULB Shark Lab explained that his students had tagged 16 sharks near Sunset Beach in the summer of 2015. Their presence is thus not rare in this place. While adults hunt their prey violently, young white sharks do so differently. They're pretty shy and avoid men.

He explained that young sharks, like the one in the video, could jump out of the water for various reasons. The first, to expel parasites from their bodies and the second, for pleasure. So sharks as playful as dolphins?
