The ABCs of the windshield wiper on a motor boat?

The windscreen monitor becomes a must on a motor boat as soon as a wheelhouse is available. Indeed, the spray that the hull lifts quickly crushes the windshield if the wind rises.

The mechanics of a boat windshield wiper are quite simple. Installing or changing a windshield wiper asks to check out some points that we are going to review.

When it's rusty, change it!

Manual or motorized?

A manual wiper is operated from the inside using a handle. The wiper moves with your hand movements. It's basic, but it has the advantage of not breaking down And above all, it's half the price of a motorized model. A model that will also be appreciated on a boat does not have a battery on board. For better equipped boats, the motorized model is much more comfortable.

Automatic return to stop?

Depending on the construction of the wiper motor, it can stop in any position or return to the starting point when the power is turned off (with the switch on the dashboard). Sometimes it's annoying to have a wiper blade in the middle of the windshield when you'd like to see it on the side.

One or two speeds?

Here it's like driving your car: wiper on speed 1 or speed 2? Some motors have a double power supply (3 wires) which allows to manage these 2 speeds. To be honest, we don't really see the point of a second gear. If it exists so much better, if not for us, it must not be a blocking criterion of choice.

What scanning angle?

Depending on the glass size, you must choose a scanning angle. It is adjustable on certain motors, or fixed according to the model. The scans range from 45° to 180°. We take a narrow sweep for small glass surfaces.

How long is the motor shaft?

The engine is installed in the cab with the wiper on the outside. The axle acting on the wiper arm must therefore be long enough to penetrate the bulkhead supporting the motor. Axis lengths range from 38 to 65 mm. Check its assembly before buying. Note that often the boat windshield wiper (unlike those on the car) is attached to the top of the windshield.

How long is the arm and broom?

The length of the arm corresponds to the middle of the wiper. The length of the broom means the height of the cleaned surface.

Right arm or pantograph?

A right arm is simple. The broom rotates on the same axis as the arm. The pantograph arm is articulated to allow the broom to always remain in the same position (often vertical). The swept area is much wider.

Broom for flat or curved glass?

On flat glass, the wiper blades are sufficient. If the glass curves, you need a broom that adapts to this curve so that the entire glass is well cleaned.
