We were able to test the Klakboat in beautiful seas. This model is available in 2 sizes: 2.60 and 2.90 m. The assembly is done in a jiffy with the two tubes, folded in the boat, which fit into each other. This is enough to keep the planks open.
Made of compressed polyethylene, the boat is both strong and flexible. It is composed of 4 plates bolted together. The shape of the boat is ensured by the flexibility of the polyethylene. Its symmetry gives it shape stability. With an opening on the bow (and the stern) close enough to the water, you will not encounter too strong waves. Water tends to enter from the bow. But without any risk since polyethylene floats. The manufacturer has also added an optional inflatable reserve buoyancy.
The interest of these "rigid" shells - in comparison with a tyre - is the glide. Whether rowing or paddling, the Klakboat glides very well on the water. The small model has 2 adults on board. Embarking and disembarking remain the critical phases on these small boats and for a departure from the beach with a few waves, it is easier to board from the back than from the side.
But if the navigation is pleasant, all the interest of the boat lies in its folding. Once ashore, the Kalkboat can be dismantled in less than a minute and folded with the help of a strap. It can then be easily loaded onto the roof of a car or stored in a garage. The hull of the 260 weighs only 12 kg!
If this boat is available in a basic version to use it as a kayak, there are also some accessories such as the chair to adapt an engine (390 euros) or a complete configuration for sailing (daggerboards, rudder and rigging, complete at 2190 euros). Due to the lack of wind, we cannot announce performance and behaviour in this configuration.
Although the concept of the folding boat is not new, the Klakboat has the advantage of the French product offered at an attractive price compared to the competition. It will also be at ease to replace a seaside kayak or to be used as a fishing boat in inland waters. Without forgetting its big strong point: the fast folding!
